Solar Eclipse Time at Ravenwood
Ravenwood will follow the district expectations for viewing the Solar Eclipse. (The district expectations were sent out via Blackboard on Wednesday and are also listed below.)
We will review (and review) the expectations for wearing the provided glasses but we would appreciate it if parents would also review keeping the glasses on during the eclipse viewing.
As a school we do not have an all school plan but each grade level is developing their own lessons and will view the eclipse as a class.
Parents may come to school and view the eclipse with their child. Parents may come into the building beginning at 12:45pm. Please come to the office and check in. Do not go around the school to the playground and wait for your child's class. All students will have glasses but we were not provided glasses for parents who come to participate. Parents and other siblings not at Ravenwood must provide their own eye wear.
*Please let your child's teacher know if you are going to be coming to view the eclipse with your child.*
Dear Olathe Public Schools Parents,
As you know, a historic event will occur in our area on August 21, when a Total Solar Eclipse will cross the continental United States from coast to coast. Olathe will be just outside the path of totality, with the eclipse beginning at 11:40 a.m. through 2:35 p.m., experiencing 99.4% of totality at 1:08 p.m.
As educators, we could not be more thrilled to have school in session that day and be able to provide students with amazing learning opportunities. The district has been preparing for this event since the spring semester. Solar eclipse viewing glasses will be provided for every student and staff member in the Olathe Public Schools. These solar eclipse glasses meet NASA safety certification guidelines. We will teach and practice with all students the safe viewing of an eclipse and stress the importance of ONLY viewing the eclipse through the glasses. Students will be required to wear their glasses anytime they are observing the sun and eclipse. Our early childhood classes will not be participating in any viewing of the solar eclipse event.
The following link provides additional safety information https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety.
Principals may be scheduling special school-wide activities for celebrating and viewing. Teachers have access to educational classroom activities to enhance students’ experience of this amazing event. In addition, we have put together a public web page of online resources for our families. That site can be found by going to https://teachers.olatheschools.com/eclipse/.
While we believe students and staff of Olathe Public Schools will have an incredible experience viewing the eclipse by participating in planned activities in their school building, we wanted to let any parents who would prefer their child NOT participate in eclipse viewing to please contact their child’s principal. Parents will have an option for their child to have an excused absence or a supervised, alternative activity will be provided at school.
We look forward to sharing this once in a lifetime experience with students and staff on August 21. Please let your child’s principal know if you have any questions.

*We will start up Monday, August 28th and we will meet every Monday through October 2nd wrapping things up with the Jared Coones Pumpkin Run on Saturday, October 7th

*RW Running Club will be Mondays after school from 3:50-4:30
*Students will be dismissed over the intercom at 3:45 to head to the gym
*Students will check in with Mr. Pitcher inside the gym and then we will all move outside to stretch and run around 3:55
*After running, we will all meet back inside the gym to stretch and then students will be dismissed at 4:30
*Parents picking up need to come to the main office doors at the front of the building so that Mr. Pitcher can wait with all kids getting rides
*Students may walk home or ride a bike but parents need to indicate this on the permission slip
I look forward to a great fall session of running club and hope to see lots of you out there! -Mr. Pitcher
