“The mock election provides students with a hands-on experience to learn about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship through the voting process,” Social Studies Coordinator Maureen Donegan said. “In the classroom, teachers introduce students to the election process through a variety of topics, based on the students’ grade level.”
For example, elementary students might learn about past presidents, the three branches of government, and civic issues. Middle school students connect what they are learning to contemporary issues. For example, they learn the history of elections and political parties, as well as the policies and issues related to the current election.
“As students reach high school, some are actually becoming eligible voters,” Donegan said. “They might be exploring their own stand on issues, researching political platforms, and participating in voter registration.”
Executive Director of General Administration/Elementary Programs Brent Yeager is excited that students have this opportunity to participate in the process, because their learning is more important than the outcome of the mock election.
“This mock election gives our students the opportunity to learn about democracy, civic duty, and participate in an election process,” he said. “It also gives our teachers real-life examples to teach our students about respecting various points of view."
Teachers have set aside specific times through Nov. 8 for students to cast their votes on everything from local issues to the presidential race.
