Purpose and Definition
The purpose of developing a Restricted Instruction protocol is to prepare and notify staff and students when a safety concern exists that could have an impact on their facility. These safety concerns may be brought to our attention by staff witnessing an event or action, a citizen reporting a concern, or notification from the police.
Any safety condition beside an A.L.I.C.E. alert is considered a Restricted Instruction. Restricted Instruction directives will be calmly communicated in simple and clear “plain language”. The following are a list of potential or sample references that may be used in the event of an incident impacting your campus.
Announcement
ALL Restricted Instruction directives should be preceded by “YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE” or “YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE…….STAND BY FOR A RESTRICTED INSTRUCTION or “YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE…….STAND BY FOR AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE.” This preemptive message is to gain the staff and students’ attention and let them know that an important message is about to be provided. The Restricted Instruction should then be provided. I further recommend the message be repeated in its entirety.
EXAMPLE:
- YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE……There is a medical emergency in room 212……I need everyone on the 200 hallway (or everyone) to remain in their classrooms until further notice………REPEATING……..There is a medical emergency in room 212……I need everyone on the 200 hallway (or everyone) to remain in their classrooms until further notice……Thank you
