Bicycle Lesson and Safety Training (BLAST) is coming to Ravenwood!
Since the program's inception in 2012, BLAST has taught over 4,000 students in 30 schools. BikeWalkKC is proud to welcome the Olathe School District as the ninth school district to participate in the BLAST program.
BLAST is an on-bike safety and handling skills training that is taught through PE classes at schools across the Kansas City metro. BikeWalkKC brings out a "mobile classroom" complete with a set of 25 helmets and mountain bikes. Through 4 interactive sessions, students learn about proper helmet fit, rules of the road, a bicycle safety check, road hazards, how to start and stop, how to scan and signal, and how to navigate through a model intersection. In some cases, students actually learn how to ride a bike for the first time!
The goals of the BLAST program are:
• Improved bicycle handling skills
• Proficiency of basic traffic skills
• Identification and avoidance of hazards
And ultimately, more students who walk and bike to school!

The opening of Olathe West High School is fast approaching and we need your help! Earlier this month, the community submitted ideas for mascot and school colors for Olathe West. The suggestions were tallied and now it's time to pick your favorite.
Will it be the Olathe West Owls, Raptors or Condors? Will the school colors be Blue/Green, Blue/Silver or Red/Black? Who will join the Eagles, Falcons, Hawks and Ravens? Tell us what you think at www.olatheschools.com/olathewestmascot. This online form will remain open until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20.
The Board of Education will review the community input and will vote on the mascot and colors at the Nov. 5 Board of Education meeting.
Congratulations to Miss Smith who is officially Mrs. Kitchen!
